How can waste composition influence the total GHG generated in landfills

Waste composition strongly influences the total greenhouse gases (GHGs) generated in landfills. This is because different waste types vary in their organic content. They also differ in degradability and biogenic carbon fraction. Here’s how:

Key Factors of Waste Composition Affecting GHG Emissions

  • Organic Content:
The greater the proportion of organic (biodegradable) materials, the more methane is produced. These materials include food scraps, garden waste, paper, and cardboard. These materials break down anaerobically, generating landfill gas primarily composed of methane (CH₄) and carbon dioxide (CO₂). For example, municipal solid waste with 40–60% organics leads to significant methane emissions.niua+1
  • Degradability:
Waste types like kitchen food waste degrade rapidly. They yield high amounts of methane. Materials like wood or paper decompose slowly. They yield less methane. Plastics, metals, and glass are inert and do not generate methane.afvalzorg+1
  • Biogenic Carbon Fraction:
Waste high in biogenic carbon results in more methane when decomposed anaerobically. The table below presents the approximate biogenic carbon content for various wastes, measured per ton of wet weight. The types, biogenic carbon content (kg/ton) and methane generated (kg/ton) are listed. Mixed Waste ranges from 75–105 for biogenic carbon and 27.5–38.5 for methane. Low Organic Waste has 30–40 for biogenic carbon and lower methane levels. Plastics/Metals are negligible in biogenic carbon and generate none of the methane. • Moisture Content:
Higher moisture accelerates decomposition, boosting methane generation.ledsgp
  • pH and Site Management:
Acidic conditions or improper compaction can slow decomposition. This reduces methane emissions but possibly raises emissions of other GHGs like N₂O.ledsgp
  • Waste Layering and Cover:
Well-managed landfills might promote more uniform anaerobic conditions. This increases total methane. Open dumps with less cover or mixing may allow partial aerobic decomposition. This produces more CO₂ (which is considered climate-neutral if biogenic).sciencedirect+1

Example

  • A landfill with mostly organic content will generate far more methane than one that is mostly plastics, metals, and glass.
  • Landfills in urban areas with 40–60% organic waste show significantly higher methane emissions compared to rural dumps with low organics.niua

Why It Matters

  • Policy Implications:
Cities can reduce landfill methane by increasing recycling and diverting organics to composting or biogas plants.
  • Emission Calculations:
Any GHG inventory or landfill emission estimate must factor in the exact waste composition to be accurate. More organic waste results in more methane, which has a strong GHG effect. Less organic waste leads to less methane.catf+1

Summary:
Waste composition determines the amount and type of GHGs generated in landfills. High-organic-content waste results in much higher methane emissions. Inert waste contributes little or no emissions.catf+2
